During the courtroom proceedings, prosecutors emphasized Promes’s significant involvement in an alleged drug smuggling operation. Evidence presented suggested that the Dutch international, who has represented his country 50 times, supposedly orchestrated the illicit activities through encrypted messaging services at the beginning of 2020. Operating under the pseudonym ‘Fantasma,’ Promes purportedly conveyed intricate details of the illegal trade.

Currently contracted to Russian club Spartak Moscow, Quincy Promes was notably absent from the court hearings. According to his lawyer Robert Malewicz, Promes has expressed no intention of returning to the country.

Malewicz remarked, “He seems to harbor the belief that, as a professional footballer, he is immune to legal repercussions. He appears to hold the notion that he is beyond reach, whether in Russia or elsewhere. It’s puzzling to contemplate how someone with such sporting success could find themselves in such dire circumstances,” during the trial.

Of Surinamese descent, Promes has a history of legal entanglements, including a previous conviction for a 2020 incident where he was sentenced to 18 months in prison for injuring his cousin during a family gathering. Developed through Ajax Amsterdam’s youth system, Quincy Promes has represented Eredivisie clubs Twente Enschede and Go Ahead Eagles during his career. Besides Russia, he has also played abroad with Spanish side FC Sevilla.
