In an unexpected twist, Marek Hamsik has made it clear during an interview that he won’t be joining the coaching staff alongside new SSC Napoli manager Francesco Calzona. Despite an invitation from the Italian coach to relocate to Naples, the former long-standing captain of the Slovak national team and “Partenopei” has gracefully declined. Instead, he will maintain his collaboration with Calzona within the Slovak national team, where he currently serves as a team manager.
At this juncture of his career and personal life, Hamsik’s priorities lie in staying rooted in his homeland, dedicating time to his family, and nurturing young football talents at his academy. While Naples remains close to his heart, it’s evident that he’s chosen to focus on his endeavors in Slovakia.
During his tenure at Napoli from 2007 to 2019, Hamsik left an indelible mark, playing 520 matches and netting 121 goals across various competitions. He notably served as the team’s captain from 2014 onwards.
As for Calzona, he steps into the role of Napoli’s head coach, succeeding Walter Mazzarri. His contract with the club spans four months, covering the remainder of the current season. His first training session is slated for Tuesday at 2:00 PM, and he’ll address the media alongside team captain Giovanni Di Lorenzo in a press conference on the eve of the Barcelona match at 7:30 PM. The Slovak Football Association has granted him permission to work with SSC Napoli until the end of the current club season, subject to specific terms and conditions.
